First Baby With DNA of Three Parents Born!

A baby has been born with the DNA's of three parents,PEOPLE reports! Scientists waited until baby Abrahim Hassan was 5-months-old to go public with the revolutionary procedure
– until they were certain he did not inherit a deadly gene from his mother.

The baby boy's mother carries genes for Leigh syndrome, a rare inherited disorder that affects the central nervous system, and resulted in the death of her first two children. The couple was opposed to the destruction of any embryos, due to their religion, so the consulted Dr John Zhang – who had been working on the "three parent technique" – at the New Hope Fertility Center in New York City.

DR Zhang explored a different approach called spindle nuclear transfer, according to New Scientist. To ensure the baby would not inherit the rare genetic gene, Zhang implanted the nucleus from one of Shaban's eggs and implanted it into a donor's egg that had its own nucleus removed.

The egg, which had Shaban's DNA and mitochondrial DNA from the donor, was fertilized with her husband's sperm. An embryo was then implanted and Abrahim was born nine months later. Zhang and his team will monitor Abrahim to make sure his mitochondria levels stay low.
