A petrol tanker has killed five people after losing control and crashing into a pavement, along Obong Itam Road in the Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
It was learnt that the tanker which was coming from the NNPC depot in Calabar was flagged down by the police when they noticed the tanker had only one headlamp which wasn't bright enough.The driver tried to evade police arrest, sped off, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a pavement, trapping a tricycle(keke) around 8.00pm on monday.
The Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Godsgift Uwem, confirmed the accident.
He said the accident happened along Kilometre 8 on the Uyo-Calabar Highway.
He said:
“The truck crashed into a pavement. It then fell on a tricycle and killed five persons.
“An injured victim was rushed to a hospital. The cause of the accident was dangerous driving. The truck crashed into a pavement and hit a tricycle. Five persons, who were all males, had been killed.”
